Covalent Bio, LLC was founded by Corey R. Deeken, PhD in 2015, combining the expertise of several consultants with diverse backgrounds in Biological and Mechanical Engineering. Areas of expertise include: biomaterials, hernia repair, product development, orthopaedic biomechanics, microfluidics, and biosensors.
Dr. Deeken received her PhD in Biological Engineering from the University of Missouri (Columbia, Missouri) with an emphasis in Biomaterials, and her graduate research focused on the design and development of novel biomaterials for soft tissue applications such as hernia repair and breast reconstruction.
Dr. Deeken spent six years at Washington University School of Medicine (St. Louis, Missouri) as Director of the Biomedical Engineering and Biomaterials Laboratory and Assistant Professor of Surgery. At Washington University, she continued her research into the development of novel biomaterials for soft tissue repair using 3-D printing and electrospinning techniques. She also comprehensively characterized the physical and mechanical properties of over 40 types of hernia repair materials and developed a large animal model to assess these materials in a functional, in vivo hernia repair environment.
Dr. Deeken is an experienced medical and technical writer, having published over 50 peer-reviewed papers in journals such as Annals of Surgery, Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Journal of Biomedical Materials Research: Part A, Journal of Biomedical Materials Research: Part B, , Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine, Surgical Endoscopy, Hernia, and Surgical Innovation.
